Pencil Sketch. Original still in gallery.

This is a page from my sketchbook, a brainstormed image drawn from a short story of mine named The Entrance. It's a sick little yarn about a couple in New South Wales, Australia--in a town called, you guessed it: The Entrance.

"The town occupies an area of land that is bounded by water on three sides. The Entrance gains it name from the channel that runs along much of its northern border that is the entrance to The Tuggerah Lakes.

Although the area was previously inhabited by the Darkinjung people, the local Indigenous Australians, it is believed Europeans first discovered it in 1796. It was found by the Governor of Tasmania who had arrived on the First Fleet during the search for an escaped convict woman, Mary Morgan, who was said to be living with the Aborigines to the North of the Hawkesbury River."

In my story, the lakes, and the channels and aqueducts (as abstractly put in my drawing above) are more than just simple bodies of water and absently formed concrete and tunnels. They are elaborate portals (e.g. Stargate-ish ripples and doorways, if you will), Entrances, soon opened wide for things to come through: Lovecraftian monstrosities that the shaky couple, bound together, can only stop.

Oh, and of course they run into the ghost of Mary Morgan.

I may post it soon.
